Pet cleaning questions answered by an Appleton Veterinarian

Whether you own a dog or a cat some animals just don’t like taking baths or being clean but that doesn’t mean you should be clean your pet. Here are some tips you need to know about pet cleaning and the best way to go about it.

How often should you do pet cleaning?

This is a common question we get asked and it varies with the type of pet and their fur but most times it’s about once a month or two should work great. This will help keep their fur and skin working properly so they don’t have problems such as itching.

Which products should I use to wash my pet?

It’s important to know that you shouldn’t use human shampoo and conditioner for your pet. You need to get a pet-specific shampoo and conditioner. If you don’t this can cause irritation to their skin that will lead to other problems for your pet.

What’s the best way to wash my pet?

The first is finding an area where you can wash your pet with enough space to move around for them.

The second would be getting something to pour water over them such as a bowl or more preferred is a movable sprayer. The second option can make it much easier to wash your pet when you can control the speed of the water as well as the direction.

The next step would be wet your pet making sure the water isn’t too hot or too cold. Followed by washing your pet with the shampoo making sure to really get down to the skin and massage into it.

Following that would be using conditioner and leaving it for a little bit and then finally rinsing everything out until there is nothing left.

As for drying your pet, you should use a towel, and depending on your pet’s fur a hairdryer would work well after using a towel.

How to wash my pet’s face?

This can be the most difficult part of the process because some pets don’t like water on their face. A good way to handle this is by using a smaller towel to make sure you don’t get it into your pet’s eyes, nose, or ears. As well as using positive praise while doing so. They may not like it but they will appreciate you more after it’s done.
