What is the Best Dog Food for Your Dog?
There are so many options out there for dog food. Wet food, dry food, grain-free, salmon, fowl, bison, etc. So how do you filter through all of the different options to ensure that you are feeding your best friend the food that is right for them?
We always recommend consulting with your pet’s veterinarian first to make sure that your dog doesn’t require grain-free dog food or have other dietary restrictions. You also want to make sure that you feed your dog the right amount of food. You don’t want your dog to be overfed or underfed.
Grain-free dog food
There has been a lot of different information around grain-free dog food. Some grain-free formulas have been potentially linked to Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) because of “filler ingredients” like peas, potatoes, lentils, and other ingredients that are used in place of the grains. If your dog requires grain-free food, please consult with one of our veterinarians to discuss the right formula for your dog.
Wet dog food
Dry food is the most popular option for pet owners because it is easier to purchase, store, and serve, but there are benefits to feeding your dog wet (canned) dog food. Here are some of the benefits of wet dog food:
- Chewing issues: Dogs that have issues chewing because of missing teeth or jaw issues have an easier time chewing and swallowing softer dog food that requires less chewing and is still relatively easy to swallow.
- More water: A wet dog food can help dogs that do not consume enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated. If you notice that your dog doesn’t seem to drink much water, or you live in a warm and dry climate, wet dog food can help your dog stay more hydrated. This can also help a dog feel more full which can sometimes lead to weight loss.
